Fairy Shrimp at Red Rock

a short film capturing fleeting life in an arid desert

Fleeting life captured on film.

Fairy shrimp are very special creatures found only for very brief periods in the ephemeral pools at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. With a lifespan that lasts sometimes just 2 weeks, it’s an amazing adaptation of aquatic life in an arid desert.

Filming the story of the fairy shrimp was particularly challenging – everything about their story is fleeting and random in occurrence. Being on location with specialized camera equipment at just the right time took research and dedication to the project.

The project was funded by Southern Nevada Conservancy, a non-profit organization that supports the Bureau of Land Management in their endeavor to inspire and educate visitors to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

It took extensive research of fairy shrimp, local ecology, and weather systems to ensure we were in the right place at the right time.
